What is a Systems Integrator? A Systems Integrator is a person or company that specializes in more than Audio/Video or Home Theater. The term was created to better embrace the broad spectrum of expertise and skill set that are required of this newer type of specialty contractor. Sean Renner is the founder and owner of PhD, a Systems Integrator. What we do is provide discerning clientele with quality service that is unsurpassed by other contractors. We are a unique hybrid of construction, architecture, electrical, design, IT, and audio/video. In 1990, Sean started in the A/V industry while in college. At that time, home theater and A/V were in their infant stages. There was no DVD or High Definition. There was no plasma or LCD TV. Computer monitors and TV’s were boxy tube sets and ate up all kinds of space. The internet was in its infant stage and most people had no idea what it was, let alone home networking. IT was nonexistent except for maybe in the corporate tech world. Who knew that everything would end in “dot com”. There may have been some rudimentary distributed audio systems in the more extravagant homes. Surround sound systems and the associated technology were mediocre and dull compared to today’s standards. Satellite TV was limited to a 10 foot dish mounted to a pole and motorized to point around the sky. Cable TV was pretty raw and everyone wanted a descrambler. If cable TV is what you needed, you called the cable guy. If telephone wiring was to be done, you called the telephone company. Stereo equipment was usually a DIY (Do It Yourself) project since you connected the stereo next to your two speakers and maybe connected to the TV if you were adventurous. Most of us came from the world of the Sony Walkman, VHS, and cassette tapes. As the years past, technology raced to provide more information than most would ever dream to digest. To top it all off, someone decided it would be a good idea to take the multitude of complex technologies and meld them together, so intertwined that it was in impossible to do one without knowledge of another. It seems the only option is to hire someone who is paid to keep up with these things. Someone who does it all day, every day. With work and family life so complex and busy, you shouldn’t have worry about technology, you should enjoy it. PhD is here for that reason.
